This is actually a project from way back in 2016. Before, this blog was even started. But, it’s still something that is in our house, that I love, so I thought it was finally time to share.
This was the first thing that the Handsome Hunk made me. Cue the string quartette and mushy feelings. We were dating and one day, I brought to his attention an old ladder that had belonged to my grandparents. It was sitting out in my garage. It was pretty old and had seen better days. But, something about it drew me to it. It was all solid wood, and looked like it was out of an old movie.
I thought it would make a darling a-frame ladder bookshelf!
I had been pinning ideas for a-frame ladder bookshelves so we decided to give it a go!
What makes this project so special is the materials used. Like I said, the ladder had been my grandparents. We were looking for something to use as the shelves, and Tom came across a Craigslist listing that was too cool to turn down.
Deception Pass is a local park and to say it’s stunning is an extreme under statement. It’s breathtaking. And, a place that holds a lot of happy memories for us, hiking, fishing, boating, and playing in the sandy beaches. The park was updating all their benches. So, they were getting rid of their old ones.
I knew instantly that was the perfect for the ladder bookshelf.
Because we were working with an existing ladder instead of building, it has lots of character, aka quirks. The shelves aren’t perfectly spaced. While we painted the ladder, there are still old paint drips and dings in the ladder. The wood for the shelves is heavily distressed after years of outdoor use at our favorite local landmark. And, all those quirks and imperfections makes me love it even more.
I had the perfect spot for it in my condo, right next to the kitchen, which made it the perfect spot for cookbooks! When we bought a house I wasn’t sure where it was going to go at first. But, found a great spot in our living room. And, it’s now home to wine, photo albums, records, and chachkies.

Jane, SO cool! I love that the wood is from Deception Pass, and I love that the ladder, itself, has such sentimental value for you. This is a beautiful accent piece. I wish I was this crafty haha
