One thing to know about me, I love a weekend away. Life gets crazy. While, I love my work, it can be stressful, and I often work long hours. The handsome hunk’s schedule can be unpredictable. So, it’s important to us to get some time away with each other. To help celebrate my 30th birthday we decided to take a little getaway weekend in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Even though we are located halfway between Seattle and Vancouver, we often spend a day in Seattle but rarely cross the border into Canada. We found a hotel with a great location, between downtown and Gastown. And, spent the weekend in Vancouver exploring. While, both of us have been to Vancouver before, it had been a decade for me, and years for Tom as well, so it was perfect to putz around town and take in all the sights.
We started our weekend in Vancouver off bright and early with a hike to Lynn Canyon suspension bridge. It was beautiful. Fun story, on our drive up the mountain, our car GPS stopped working. It thought we were driving sideways through the valley. We had no cell service, and couldn’t bring up a map on our phones. So, we got lost, and started out our hike in a completely different area, because we couldn’t find the entrance to the park. It made for a fun adventure. When we finally did find the right spot, we hiked along and stumbled on a group filming a music video.
Tom was really excited to take me to the aquarium. What I loved about the Vancouver Aquarium is the large section of the aquarium dedicated to local marine life. While I love seeing all the tropical fish, even more, I like seeing what is swimming around in the ocean right in my backyard. And, of course, the jellyfish. I could watch them for hours!
Another highlight of the trip was Granville Island. If you’re in Vancouver and playing tourist, make sure than Granville Island is on your itinerary. We grabbed lunch at Granville Island Brewery, which was excellent, and we loved all the beers we tried. Then poked around some shops and the Granville Island Market. There was tons of great produce, baked goods, and crafts. We could have spent an entire day on Granville Island.
Since we got back, I’ve been planning our next trip to Vancouver. For your weekend trip to Vancouver, or any getaway, my weekend packing checklist will help you pack your bag in a flash. I lived in a cozy sweatshirt coat from Target all weekend, which kept me warm but not overheating. It was the perfect early spring layer. They don’t have mind anymore, but they do have this one that I think I like even more! I may have to get it for myself as well. My other go to item for this trip was my purse that doubles as a camera bag! It comes in a bunch of colors, and unlike a lot of camera bags, it’s small enough that I didn’t mind lugging it around.

The closest I’ve ever come to B.C. was a trip to Victoria many years ago. Vancouver has always seemed like a great destination, but we’re moving to the Midwest in two months so I don’t think it’s going to happen. Looks like a great time for you guys, though!

Victoria is another one of my favorite spots! Where in the Midwest are ya’ll moving? There are tons of great cities in the Midwest, and the best people.
Mark says
We’re headed to Rapid City, South Dakota.
