In years past I’ve excitedly shared our holiday decorations. If you’re looking for neutral Christmas decor inspiration or ideas for gift wrapping be sure to check those out. But 2020 and now 2021 my decor hasn’t been shared and isn’t Pinterest worthy. Life is hard, beautiful and messy and hasn’t been picture perfect lately. What I’ve found, when life gets messy is when it also gets its most special. And while my holidays haven’t been “Pinterest worthy” they have been the most beautiful to me.

Right before last holiday season I found myself in a life and death situation, literally. And, when you find yourself knocking on death’s door, things that mattered before, simply don’t anymore. Over the holidays I was in and out of hospitals, on a concoction of drugs keeping me alive that ironically felt like they took the life out of me and decorating was the furthest thing from my mind. I had zero holiday cheer.
And, that’s when my husband showed up with a tree.
I didn’t have the physical strength or energy to decorate it myself, so he decorated it himself with dollar store ornaments and tacky tinsel, just to bring some seasonal joy in my life. We didn’t put up any of our usual ornaments or decorations. I didn’t use my Christmas tree lights technique that wraps every single branch with lights. It wasn’t curated and it wasn’t something that anyone would look up as inspiration, but it was by far the most beautiful tree we have ever had. It was decorated with something more than ornaments and tinsel, it was full of love and literally brought me to tears.
This year, my health is still not where I would like it to be, and still taking a toll on our lives. In addition to that we are in the middle of, remodeling our house. We are making our first house a true home with pieces of ourselves and our literal blood, sweat and tears. It felt too much to decorate while laying floor, putting on new baseboards, and painting. It was too much while there are power tools in every room of the house, hammers and nails on the coffee table and an air compressor living where a tree usually goes.
So, here we are, another year without Pinterest worthy decorations. And, it’s another year where it’s so much more meaningful that a house that looks like it’s out of a catalog. We did small pockets of holiday cheer. Some garland on the mantle, a nativity scene and a little tabletop tree.

What will next year bring? Will I go back to decorating to the nines for the holidays? Or embrace this new idea of less and letting simplicity take center stage? I’m not sure yet, but I do know that I’m happy having and content not having a Pinerest worthy holiday season.
